Industries such as power plants, agricultural machinery using heavy-duty equipment, marine life underwater or automobile, makes use of O-ring seals that serve multiple purposes. There are many types of materials from which every industry gets to choose but it’s very difficult to choose the right one. Below is a list of application categorisation of O-ring seals available, advantageous and serves as a good possibility for different industries.
Nitrile O-rings
Most commonly used and multi-purpose O-ring elastomers are Nitrile, offering a widespread temperature range from -50°C to 120°C with a supreme set of resistance to oils, water, hydraulic liquids, automobile fluids for breaks, etc. Industries such as agriculture, dairy, railways, mining, automobile and plumbing use Nitrile.
Silicone O-rings
In comparison to that of Nitrile O-rings, Silicone ones have much more withstanding temperature capacity ranging from -100°C to 300°C. It also is believed to have greater tolerance to extreme temperatures making it the best choice during weather conditions both high and low. Its flexibility to performe alongside substances such as petroleum, water and steam is extraordinary.
Viton™ O-rings
Made of Fluorocarbon with boasting temperature resistance, permeability to low gas and high grade mechanical behaviour makes Viton O-ring one of its kind set to a lower compression. Such O-rings are best used for substances such as acids, petrol, halogen based hydrocarbons, silicon gases and fluids. Industries such as aviation, automobiles, chemicals and mechanical plants use Viton O-rings.
FEP O-rings – Made of Silicone or Fluorocarbon material, coated with fluorinated ethylene propylene used in FMCG, chemical, pharma and petrochemical industries.
PFA O-rings – Enclosure consisting of perfluoroalkoxy which acts as an alternative for FEP O-rings. These are also used by industries similar to FEP O-rings.
USP Class VI O-rings – The USP stands for an accreditation received from US Pharmacopeia for those O-rings that are tested rigorously to test their quality, strength, consistency and purity to ensure its safety in places where life of humans are at stake.
Vulc O-rings – Methodology of making differs from above O-rings, where sulphur is treated at a temperature after which they are split to form the shape of a donut. These O-rings are more cost-efficient and productive.
